We can’t wait to dive deep with the Earth Day release of Disneynature’s Oceans. Judging from the trailer, the film’s enchanting imagery (shot at more than 50 locations using the newest underwater technology) of coral reefs, dark-dwelling critters, and majestic whales is sure to indulge our unrequited childhood marine biologist dreams. In eager anticipation (and celebration of National Week of the Ocean), we decided to salute the sea in style. New England-approved stripes, feisty prints, and ruffled numbers prove Ariel correct in her theory that the real action isn’t always lurking underwater. Before you anchor down summer plans, consult our beachside bikini travel guide to three very different hot spots—and suit yourself.
Newport, Rhode Island
Leave behind teeny bikinis and loud patterns in favor of classic cuts, nautical stripes, and trusty Nantucket reds. The cute, playful buttons on the Gap bottoms stand out in a sea of monogram totes and Lily dresses, and the Rosa Cha’s clever chambray-and-stripes is an elegant and unexpected update on the standard. For traditionalists, set sail in a striped J.Crew one piece.
Cape stripe underwire tank, $125, J.Crew; Rosa Cha Runway and Striped Bikini, $370, at ShopBop; Sailor girl short bikini, $34.50 at Gap.

Folly Beach, South Carolina
Moonlight as a southern belle in the season’s sweetest swimsuit trend: ruffles. We’re smitten with the Marysia halter bikini top, which could also double as a pretty bralette under a tied and twisted button-down after the beach. J.Crew’s ice cream-colored seersucker bikini is equally sweet. For beach bunnies looking for a Lolita-esque suit, nothing beats Undrest’s monokini. Coquettish cut outs and a bold back give the playful piece charm and sex appeal.
Marysia halter bikini top, $98, at Urban Outfitters; Pom pom seersucker halter, $48 at J.Crew; Ruffled monokini, $175, at Undrest

Cannon Beach, Oregon
Artsy and escapist, this is the spot to debut fringe-adorned pieces and bohemian styles. With a loose braid and beachy waves, Mara Hoffman’s headdress bikini rivals a Northwestern sunset with its shocking silhouette and shades. Or get crafty with crochet two ways: in a cheerful lemon, or boardwalk ready one-piece.
Mara Hoffman headdress bikini $188, at Shopbop; Watersun crochet $120, at Urban Outfitters; Tyler Rose lemon crochet bikini top, $84, at Shopbop
