L to R: Duvall, Gertz, and Gellar

Slash Acts

Trend Takeaways from Our Favorite Horror Movie Muses

A Nightmare on Elm Street joins the ranks of horror reboots with an edgier update slated for release this April. In anticipation of the film, we started charting our favorite horror flicks and discovered that masked monsters may not be the only things in scary movies that never die. From Children of the Corn’s amazing Amish styles (so Zac Posen Spring '08) to Mia Farrow’s adorable smocks in Rosemary’s Baby, slasher flicks are a surprisingly serious fashion goldmine.

Here are our three favorite leading ladies of horror, with current, on-trend pieces to adopt from their signature styles. Because just when you thought they were dead, they always come back.

Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance in The Shining

Trend: Turtlenecks under dresses

Looking back, we must have been too overwhelmed with Jack, "Red rum," and those creepy twins in the hallway to appreciate Shelley Duvall’s killer wardrobe. Along with ski lodge-perfect sweaters and overalls, she rocked fall’s biggest trend, turtlenecks under dresses, in almost every scene. Don’t wait for Cynthia Steffe and Vena Cava’s autumn 2010 collections. This look also works well in the not-quite-warm transitional spring months to milk extra mileage from summery frocks.

Turtlenecks: American Apparel, $28; Petit Bateau, $31; Michael Stars, $55

Jami Gertz as Star in The Lost Boys

Trend: Girly white camisoles

The Lost Boys did more than just pair the two Coreys together—it also showcased a scream queen embracing this season's lingerie-as-outerwear trend. As Star, Jami sported off the shoulder tops and a pretty, white camisole. Exposed intimates are everywhere this spring (corsets at Jean Paul Gaultier, lace at Dolce & Gabbana, the list goes on) but simple white eyelet pieces help extend the look well into summer.

White tops: Kimchi Blue Badlands camisole, $18; J.Crew Cappy Eyelet cami, $69.50; Topshop embroidery anglais crop cami, $44.50

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer

Trend: Clogs

After being crowned Miss Croaker, poor Helen Shiver’s life took a turn for the worst. Her boyfriend drunkenly runs over a vengeful maniac, her hair gets hacked up, and then, so does she. Thankfully, the beauty pageant princess’ style fared a little better. Even though Helen spent a good portion of the film running for her life in an unfortunate gown and stilettos, she had some key moments. A true fashion forecaster, Helen mastered this season’s cult accessory, the clog. Take a cue from her character and try 'em with high-waisted shorts, a cinched white shirt, and black headband.

Clogs: Kors Michael Kors platform clog, $275; Jeffrey Campbell Charli, $125; Swedish Hasbeens Grease sky high, $230

Tying in fashion with current culture was is what Venuszine is about. I am glad you are back and plan to pick up the magazine. I would like to see more fashion articles which are current and do-able. Maybe one on thrift store fashion (but current and edgy-how to tie it all together) I have read fashion articles by Ms. Kasprzak before in other publications and was glad to see her back.
