Fashionista of the Week: 10/22

An FIDM student cozies up to oversize sweaters

Once upon a time Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen roamed the streets of New York, L.A., Paris, and anywhere with sidewalks disguised as posh bag ladies—each with a Givenchy purse in one hand and a Venti house blend in the other. It was at that moment that two style icons were born, and adoring fans embraced the look. Now the girls are grown up and have polished their looks, but their signature oversize accessories are still hot commodities—like this Fashionista’s perfect oversize shrug. This knit is an effortless piece that can blend well with many different outfits, and it has a chic comforting appeal.

She takes a simple ensemble to the next level by playing with proportion and adding some quirky details. She teams an adobe-colored palette tunic with laced peep toes and animal print socks. The look is chic and modern, but still inviting. The warm and singular color palette keeps this outfit balanced and fun. And its centerpiece, the shrug, to me is a statement piece that can translate to many fashion languages.

For everyday wear, match a big knit with a simple V-neck and skinny jeans, or take it to evening with a tuxedo blouse and velvet shorts. You can choose from a variety—some have stud detail, belts (Zara Cardigan, $79.99, above), preppy appeal, and unusual lengths. Play around and find one that fits your style. If in doubt, go a size up. It won’t hurt your look.
