One of the many beauties of tools is that they are often named after their function. Hammer. Drill. Screw. One does not generally think such simple elegance can be found at the neighborhood hardware store. But lo! The feel of the right hammer in hand is indescribable. And, if one tries to put words to the sensation, the result will be terribly phallic.
Most hammerheads are made out of heavy-duty steel, but handles can come in either metal or wood and may or may not be wrapped with a rubber grip. Standard hammers for use in household tasks and light carpentry will weigh in the neighborhood of 20 oz., give or take a few. Scrimp or splurge - hammers can cost as little as a dollar at a discount store, but a Craftsman number will run around $20.
Swing the hammer with smooth, long strokes no higher than shoulder height. The hammer will be easier to aim and control. Hammering can be a meditative experience, and you'll find that as you keep focused on the task, your aim will become better and better.
If you don't have a hammer, purchase one. Use the same keen eye you'd employ for the purchase of a good purse or stereo equipment. With care, your hammer will last a lifetime.
