It's true: I can't go more than a few months without pulling out my Clueless DVD. When I tell people this, which is fairly often, they tend to assume that I am a "superficial space cadet" who can't get past the teeny-bopper ideals of young adulthood. And yeah, okay, I'll admit it. I love movies about high school (think Mean Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and can't help but reminisce about my own teenage days.
However, there's is more to the film than a cute girl (Cher Horowitz, perfectly played by Alicia Silverstone) wearing trendy clothes. As Cher meddles in the love lives of teachers and friends, endures one relationship mishap after another, and cares for her dad-all while looking fabulous-she sticks to her to her guns. With an honest and heartfelt inner dialogue, Cher is relatable and funny, if a little absent-minded, and she exudes the type of confidence that I think more young people should embrace.
Director Amy Heckerling injects the film with parody, and fills the screen with qualities that make the teen-movie clichés more bearable for an adult audience. The references to Shakespeare are hilarious, Tai's makeover is totally awesome (the late Brittany Murphy was a true gem in this role), and the young Paul Rudd is super cute and irresistible. Clueless, in my opinion, has the makings of a true classic.
