In the autumn of the Soviet Union, months before its official dissolution, Capcom released Street Fighter II – a game important for leading the wave of the fighting game craze and for giving us the powerful and misunderstood Zangief. Aiden Landman is a Venus Zine editorial intern.
Zangief, a Soviet wrestler, is the USSR's representative in the Street Fighter tournament. He is known for being cold, calculating, and thirsty for blood.
But that's not the whole story.
Zangief Chronicles, a new Web-series, examines the man behind the tournament and the results of their character study are at the same time shocking and hilarious. Drawing inspiration from decades old stereotypes and fish out of water stories, Zangief Chronicles casts its titular character as a man longing for friendship, love, and to be understood.
