Venus Zine’s 1st Annual Photo Contest: Music / Concert
Issue #45
By Venus Zine Staff
Published: November 1st, 2010 | 12:00am
For our first annual Photo Contest, Venus Zine
received over 1,500 entries from talented photographers all over the
world. Our esteemed panel of judges selected one winner from each of
five different categories—street fashion, music/concert, travel,
portrait, and food—which we present in our winter issue (on newsstands now!), along with our readers’ choice and staff favorites.
Since we didn't have room to print 'em, we decided to pull 30 of our
favorite runners-up in the music / concert category and share them here. Take a
look, and let us know what you think! We'll give our favorite
(constructive!) commenter a prize.

“Taken at the Philadelphia Folk Festival using a medium format Holga camera”

photographer: Allison Moore
“Shot at Kill Hannah's annual Christmas show 3 years ago at The Vic Theatre in Chicago.”

“Former lead singer Carah Faye Charnow performing with Shiny Toy Guns in Louisville, Kentucky in 2007.”

photographer: Angela Datre
“I made this photo at Hallowmas, band The World/Inferno Friendship Society's biggest show, at the Grand Ballroom in Manhattan on Halloween 2009. For the last song the crowd all jumped on stage. The colors created by the stage lights were beautiful and everyone was so happy. There were such great vibes in the air so I made this image of a guy that was just so into it.”

photographer: Angela Datre
“I made this photo of Katy Perry at a special performance she did in April 2009 at the Paper magazine Beautiful People party. She had such a great energy and stage presence.”

photographer: Laura Ward
“This is a photo of Delline Bass performing with Black Butterflies, shot through a window of an art deco Lido Cafe in London, England.”

photographer: Carrie Paterna
“This was taken with a Canon A2 35mm camera.”

photographer: Michael Ervin
“Got this great shot of Joan Jett in Oklahoma City at Frontier City amusement park on July 14, 2007. Lots of attitude in this one!”

photographer: Volodymyr Zaytsev
“As much as any photographer would love to admit that his best photos take virtuoso skill, sometimes it really does come down to being in the right moment at the right time and having to instinctively react to the situation. During this particular band rehearsal, by accident the fog machines went off and in the little space of time before the crew shut them off, I had the time to run around and snap only one picture.”

photographer: Volodymyr Zaytsev
“It should be said that a definitive requirement on a resume of an event photographer is the ability to perform magic. Who could have guessed that the backdrop to this photo is a corner of a rundown loft with cracks in the walls and sagging ceilings? Environments like these force you to seriously think beyond the conventional methods of "pressing a button and hoping for some good results."

photographer: Volodymyr Zaytsev
“Recently I've realized that a lot of my good friends are DJs, and than I began photographing them out of curiosity as to see how it would compare to large scale concert photography. To my surprise, I found the task to be a lot more daunting and challenging than expected. Taking an interesting picture of a standing person who is enshrouded in blinding lights is a lot more complicated than it originally seems. Without giving away all of the secrets, hands dexterity is the key!”

photographer: Kara Thomas
“This is a photo of Adam Lambert's bassist, Tommy Joe Ratliff taken at The Tower Theatre in Philadelphia on August 12, 2010. It's my favorite capture ever at a concert because it feels so derivative of an old silent classic horror movie yet with a new school glam twist.”

photographer: Shane Jenkinson
“Die Mannequin at the Horseshoe 2008 in Toronto, Canada.”

photographer: Nick Leonard
“A fun shot I made when I first watched Semi Precious Weapons perform at the House of Blues in Las Vegas.”

photographer: Virginia Lai
“Paz Lenchantin of The Entrance Band”

photographer: Virginia Lai
“Guy Blakeslee of The Entrance Band. Douple exposure.”

photographer: Virginia Lai
"Double exposure."

photographer: Virginia Lai
"The Vicious Guns."

photographer: Kate Yang-Nikodym
“Emma Richardson of Band Of Skulls. It's amazing what you can do with a toy camera, drugstore film, and a bottle of tequila. Toronto, 2009.”

photographer: Kate Yang-Nikodym
“Chan Marshall/Cat Power. Toronto, 2007.”

photographer: Arianna Biasini
“Chibi of The Birthday Massacre.”

photographer: Joey Espina
“Singer and bassist Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes performing at a record shop.”

photographer: Courtney Bell
“This is the band Clutch performing at The V Club in Huntington, WV on 6/5/2010. My cheek was laying on the stage in a pool of beer when I took this, but I got the shot I wanted.”

photographer: Nuno Fangueiro
“Photo taken at Sigur Rós show, in Lisbon 2008.”

“The hand. Photo taken at Goldfrap show at Marés Vivas Festival 2010.”

photographer: Pairamaporn Buranakol
“Orianthi (who was to have appeared in Micheal Jackson's tour prior to his death) was the opening act for a concert I attended, and was amazing talented with the guitar. I took this shot of her, with her guitarist, Brian in the background.”

i love the shot by Allison Moore from the Kill Hannah show (first picture of the two) because it really shows the perspective of the audience and that raw energy at concerts. And i also love the tones in the picture and the great high contrast that magnifies the singer.

Hey Venus Zine! Thanks for featuring two of my photographs here. I appreciate it! I wanted to comment and say how much I love Nuno Fangueiro's Sigur Rós confetti shot. The colors are beautiful and I enjoy how some confetti pieces are in focus while others are not. Getting exposure, focus, and composition right while simultaneously giving your attention to the band, the music, and the fans around you is not an easy thing! Good job Nuno!

The range of photography, locations, and subjects is so inspiring!

I love the photo by Kara Thomas of Tommy Ratliff. The expression on his face and his slightly crouched posture do remind me of a classic horror film, and Kara caught him at the perfect moment! The black and white hue along with the grainy noise of the finished photo are perfect for the effect! Add the contrast of the shiny modern electric bass guitar and it's an interesting paradox and beautiful photograph!!

Kara Thomas is my favourite. She is such an amazing photographer, because she captures the emotions in a way that makes you "hear" the pictures
